Strange-But-True Health Tips - Healthy Pinay

1.Crazy health tricks that really work

Many methods to improve your health are pretty straightforward: to lose weight, eat less and exercise more; to boost your energy, get more sleep; to prevent dehydration, drink more water. Others, however, are totally counter intuitive. The following 12 tips really do work—but they may leave you scratching your head.

2.Drink coffee to have a better nap

In a Japanese study that examined how to make the most of a nap, people who took a "coffee nap"—consuming about 200 milligrams of caffeine (the amount in one to two cups of coffee) and then immediately taking a 20-minute rest—felt more alert and performed better on computer tests than those who only took a nap.
Why does this work? A 20-minute nap ends just as the caffeine kicks in and clears the brain of a molecule called adenosine, maximizing alertness. "Adenosine is a byproduct of wakefulness and activity," says Allen Towfigh, MD, medical director of New York Neurology & Sleep Medicine. "As adenosine levels increase, we become more fatigued. Napping clears out the adenosine and, when combined with caffeine, an adenosine-blocker, further reduces its effects and amplifies the effects of the nap."

Health Tips

3.For healthy teeth, don't brush after eating

Don't brush your teeth immediately after meals and drinks, especially if they were acidic. Acidic foods—citrus fruits, sports drinks, tomatoes, soda (both diet and regular)—can soften tooth enamel "like wet sandstone," says Howard R. Gamble, immediate past president of the Academy of General Dentistry. Brushing your teeth at this stage can speed up acid's effect on your enamel and erode the layer underneath. Gamble suggests waiting 30 to 60 minutes before brushing.

4.To wear a smaller size, gain weight

Muscle weight, that is. If two women both weigh 150 pounds and only one lifts weights, the lifter will more likely fit into a smaller pant size than her sedentary counterpart. Likewise, a 150-pound woman who lifts weights could very well wear the same size as a 140-pound woman who doesn't exercise. The reason: Although a pound of fat weighs the same as a pound of muscle, muscle takes up less space, says Mark Nutting, fitness director of SACO Sport & Fitness in Saco, Maine. "You can get bigger muscles and get smaller overall if you lose the fat," he says. "The bulk so many women fear only occurs if you don't lose fat and develop muscle on top of it." Cut back on calories and add weight to your workout to lose inches.

5.To eat less, eat more

Grabbing a 100-calorie snack pack of cookies or pretzels may seem virtuous, but it's more likely to make you hungrier than if you ate something more substantial, says Amy Goodson, RD, dietitian for Texas Health Ben Hogan Sports Medicine. "Eating small amounts of carbohydrates does nothing but spike your blood sugar and leave you wanting more carbs." Goodson recommends choosing a protein such as peanut butter or string cheese with an apple. "They are higher in calories per serving, but the protein and fat helps you get full faster and stay full longer—and you end up eating fewer calories overall," she says.

6.Skip energy drinks when you're tired

Energy drinks contain up to five times more caffeine than coffee, but the boost they provide is fleeting and comes with unpleasant side effects like nervousness, irritability, and rapid heartbeat, says Goodson. Plus, energy drinks often contain high levels of taurine, a central nervous system stimulant, and upwards of 50 grams of sugar per can (that's 13 teaspoons worth!). The sweet stuff spikes blood sugar temporarily, only to crash soon after, leaving you sluggish and foggyheaded—and reaching for another energy drink.

7.Drink water when you're bloated

When you feel bloated, drinking water sounds as if it would only make matters worse, but it can often help, says James Lee, MD, gastroenterologist with St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, Calif. If you're on a high-fiber diet, for instance, then your body needs more water to work more efficiently, says Dr. Lee. "Water mixes with water soluble fiber and makes it into a gel like substance. This affects the motility of the gut and reduces the symptom of bloating." Drinking more water also relieves bloating caused by dehydration. When you're dehydrated, your body clings to the water your body does have, causing you to puff up.

8.Ditch diet soda to lose weight

You should ditch all soda, including diet. Research from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health revealed that overweight and obese adults who drank diet beverages ate more calories from food than those who drank regular soda. Additionally, a University of Texas study found that diet soda drinkers had a 70% greater increase in waist circumference than non-drinkers over the course of about 10 years.

"In addition, many people think 'low-fat,' 'low-sugar,' or 'light' means fewer calories, but that's not always true," says Goodson. "Typically when manufacturers cut something out and the end result tastes just as good, they've added something like additional sugar."

9. Drink a hot beverage to cool off

Which will cool you off faster on a steamy summer morning: iced coffee or hot? Two recent studies say the latter—and so do other cultures where drinking hot tea in hot weather is the norm, like in India. When you sip a hot beverage, your body senses the change in temperature and increases your sweat production. Then, as the sweat evaporates from your skin, you cool off naturally.

10. Exercise when you're tired

After a long, exhausting workday, exercising sounds like the last thing you'd want to do, but getting your sweat on will actually energize you. Fatigue along with mood and depression improved after a single 30-minute moderate intensity exercise session, according to a study published in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise. "Everything we do uses oxygen, so when you exercise it helps you work more efficiently and you don't tire as easily," says Nutting. "You also function better mentally."

11. Hand write notes to boost your brainpower

Typing notes enables you to jot down more material, but you're more likely to remember those notes if you hand write them, according to research from Indiana University. "To learn something means you have processed it," says Dr. Towfigh. "And when you take handwritten notes you 'process' or learn more information. You begin the learning process as you listen to the lecture." Plus, since you look at the page on which you are writing, you naturally review the material and reinforce the information you've already processed, Dr. Towfigh says.

12. To improve your relationship, spend less time together

Jumping from one social event to another without any time to come up for air could sacrifice the quality of your relationships. Spending time alone allows you to process your thoughts rather than act impulsively and, as a result, you get to know yourself better, says Elizabeth Lombardo, PhD, author of Better Than Perfect: 7 Strategies to Crush Your Inner Critic and Create a Life You Love. "Alone time enables you to be more in touch with yourself and can better give and receive," Lombardo says. "In addition, it reduces stress and anxiety, which could also contribute to relationship strains." Meditate, go for a walk, sit in a café and people watch, or even clean out your closet, she suggests.

13. Ditch antibacterial soap to prevent illness

Reaching for the soap bottle labeled "antibacterial" won't necessarily reduce your risk of getting sick or passing illness to others—in fact, there is no evidence that antibacterial soaps are more effective than regular ones. What's more, long-term exposure to some ingredients in these products, such as triclosan, may pose health risks like bacterial resistance or hormonal effects, according to a 2013 FDA statement. More research on the effects of triclosan is needed, and in the meantime, the FDA is working toward requiring manufacturers to prove their products are safe for long-term use—and the state of Minnesota has banned triclosan-containing products altogether, which goes into full effect in 2017.

Tips for A Healthy Summer 2018 - Healthy Pinay

Summer has finally arrived!

It’s time to whip out the BBQs, dig out those bikinis and jet off on holiday for some well-deserved relaxation on the beach.

However, for many of us, summer also brings the temptations of ice cream, overdoing the tan and forgetting the summer diet and exercise.

Luckily, HELLO! Online has put together its top 10 tips for a healthy summer.

 Healthy Summer

1. Always apply suncream
It is important to use a suncream lotion of at least SPF 30 in order to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. For sensitive skin, a mineral-based sunscreen is best. Don’t sit in the sun in peak hours between 10am and 4pm in order to minimize UV radiation. If you are planning to be out in the sun for a long period of time, reapply suncream every two to three hours.

2. Drink plenty of water
During the hot summer months, heat and sweat can leave your body dehydrated. A lack of water is harmful to your body and can also make you crave food when you’re not actually hungry. It is incredibly important to keep yourself hydrated by drinking at least eight to nine glasses of water a day. Bored of water? Add some low calorific flavoring to water such as a piece of fruit, or opt for healthy alternatives like green tea or coconut water.

3. Beware of ‘healthy’ smoothies
Fruit smoothies are a great way to get your five-a-day and keep refreshed throughout the summer, but watch out for smoothies made with frozen yoghurts or ice cream as they can be extremely calorific.

A healthy smoothie should be made with fruit, juice, low fat-yoghurt and ice. Use any fruit you might have or have kept in the freezer, and throw it all in a blender to make a perfect summer drink.

4. Exfoliate
Summer means an increase of dead skin cells so it is important to exfoliate your skin to keep it smooth and silky. You don’t need to buy any expensive products to achieve that summer glow; simply use a loafer for a light scrub or make your own exfoliation lotion using a handful of oatmeal, milk and yoghurt.

5. Keep up the exercise regime
Before you hide those running shoes in the wardrobe, remember summer exercise doesn’t have to stop because of the rising temperatures. Instead of working out outside, change your exercise plan and take it indoors. Join a gym, take up a step class, or get a group of friends around for an afternoon of exercise DVDs.

6. Get wet
Summer is the perfect time of year to get wet! Boring runs in the cold wintery weather can be swapped for a summer swim at your local pool or gym. Start by swimming for 10 minutes and increase the time over the following weeks by doing front crawl, breaststroke or backstroke to mix up your cardio workout. A 30 minute session of this full body workout will burn almost 400 calories! If swimming laps isn’t your thing, join a water aerobics class or create your own aerobic workout with jumping jacks, marching and jogging in water.

7. Olive oil
Olive oil is a healthy fat which contains essential fatty acids that help skin resist UV damage. These fatty acids are also part of the cell membranes that keep in all that moisture your body loses through heat and sweat during the summer. In order to protect your skin and keep it supple, consume about 1 tablespoon of olive oil daily or add it to a healthy salad or fish dish in order to get all those essential fatty acids.

8. Protect your glossy locks
Our hair suffers a lot during the summer. Constant heat, sun damage and chlorine takes a toll on our hair and can leave it feeling limp and dull after the holidays. If you’re planning on swimming a lot during the summer, it is advisable to use anti-chlorine shampoo and conditioner to help neutralize the chlorine from your hair. If possible, minimize the use of hairdryers, straighteners and other heating products. Towel dry your hair, apply a handful of mouse and revel in beachy summer waves.

9. Eat healthy by the pool
When the sun is beating down, the idea of seeking out the nearest ice cream stand is seriously tempting. Stay strong by being prepared, and pack a cooler full of healthy snacks and juices. Fill your ice-box with ice, bottled water, sandwiches, vegetable sticks with hummus, yoghurts and endless amounts of fruit.

10. Take up a new hobby
Summer is the perfect time to take up a new activity. Gardening is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and will actually help you burn some calories! Planting a herb garden is a fantastic way of getting your hands dirty, having quick access to some healthy flavours for your summer meals and, if you have kids, get them involved in playing outside.

If gardening isn’t your thing, get some inspiration from Wimbledon and try your hand at some tennis or golf. Pilates is the perfect alternative for some alone time in the garden. Roll out a towel and have some fun trying out planks and some breathing techniques in the sun.

Reduce your risk of prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. While there is no absolutely safe way to prevent prostate cancer, there are several things you can do to keep your body in optimal shape and reduce developing the disease, even if you do part of a family at risk.

1-Know what are the risk factors.

Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer diagnosed in men and the second most common cancer after lung cancer. In the case of prostate cancer, it is important to be aware of the risk factors that increase your chances of developing this disease.

Age: Prostate cancer is very common among men over 50 years old. It is quite rare in younger men, but the risk increases with age.

Family history: Men whose family has a history of prostate cancer - whether father, brother or uncle - are more likely to develop the disease.

Race: The prostate cancer rate is higher in African men than in white men and the outcome of the disease is more likely fatal in black men.

Hormones: The way your body produces testosterones can influence the development of prostate cancer. If too much of your body's testosterone is converted to DHT (a hormone that must be present in good quantity), it can cause enlargement of prostate, which increases risk of cancer.

2-Have regular physical activity.

Studies have shown that men who are physically active and have regular physical activity are less likely to have prostate cancer. Some studies also indicate that the risk decreases even more if sports activities are supported.

Endurance exercises are the best way to prevent the onset of the disease because they have a lot of health benefits, including better blood circulation, a healthier immune system, and higher levels of health. higher energy levels.

Examples of endurance exercises include swimming, running, cycling, dancing and rowing. Find an endurance activity that you like and you'll be more likely to stick to it.

You should also make effort to be more active in everyday life. Take stairs instead of elevator, park your car a little away from your workplace and work at a desk in a standing position rather than sitting in front of a desk.

It is recommended that you have a physical activity of at least thirty minutes, if possible every day of the week.

Ways to Increase Your White Blood Cell Count

White blood cells, also called leukocytes, are the natural defenses of the body to fight infections. They eat away unwanted bacteria and other substances that invade the body and are therefore responsible for immunity - the body's ability to fight infections.

White Blood Cell

A normal white blood cell count is 4,000 to 11,000 cells of cells per microliter of blood. Some people may have fewer white blood cells for genetic reasons. Others may have less because of a viral or bacterial infection. In both cases, start with the first step if you want to increase the number of your white blood cells!

1-Consume enough protein.

A balanced diet allows bone marrow, which produces white blood cells, to get the nutrients it needs. Start by making sure you eat enough protein, which is main component of white blood cells. You can stock up on protein with meat, fish, poultry, cheese, eggs and legumes.

2-Choose good lipids.

Do not take saturated fats, but eat unsaturated fats. Saturated fats increase risk of heart attack, but unsaturated fats promote absorption of lipid-soluble vitamins in body. These "good lipids" are found in corn, sesame, safflower oil, bean sprouts and olive oil.

3-Eat carbohydrates.

Consume wheat, corn and cereals, which create body energy needs to produce white blood cells.

Carbohydrates are healthy, but limit sugars and sweets! Sugar can prevent the proper functioning of white blood cells.

4-Take supplements based on copper and zinc.

Copper and zinc are the most important enzyme components in white blood cells. A deficiency of minerals of this type can decrease the number of your white blood cells. In addition to supplements, you can find copper in organ meats, green vegetables and cereals. You can find zinc in meat, fish and milk.

Increase your physical activity

Do you suffer from chest pain, shortness of breath, or migraines more often than you should? Have the risks of having a heart attack already been considered high? Some tips will help you improve blood circulation throughout your body and reduce the risk of heart attack.

exercise regularly

Walk regularly. Going for a walk after meals can help improve blood circulation and help your digestive system do its work. It is recommended to walk at least 30 minutes each day.

Do a little exercise as soon as you can. Anything that contributes to overall fitness is likely to improve your circulation. When you exercise, try to alternate the following.

Cardiovascular training. Swimming, cycling, running, team sports, etc. Such sports will improve both cardiac and vascular functions.

Bodybuilding. Strength training (using any weight) will allow you to shape your muscles, which in turn improves the efficiency of blood and lymphatic circulation.

Every hour, get up and do the equivalent of 3 to 5 minutes of stretching or small exercises. This is especially convenient if you are all day in front of an office and have few opportunities to take a ride. For example, make small circles with your arms, try to touch your toes with your hands, beat your legs, or make small jumps (just enough to speed up your pulse).

Get a massage. Massages, such as sports, improve local circulation by stimulating blood flow in soft tissues. Many studies highlight the general effectiveness of massage during healing .

Put your feet up. Raising your legs is a good way to improve your circulation and relax at the same time. It also reduces the risk of varicose veins, which are caused by high blood pressure or simply standing for long periods of time.

Sunflower seeds are not the only ones that are effective at fighting cholesterol; nuts, almonds and other types of nuts are also. All are usually rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids: good fats. As long as these nuts are not salty or sweet, you can eat a handful (43 g) per day without problems.
